What is the Student/Teacher Ratio?
The maximum number of students in a classroom is 25. However, our grades 1 - 3 classes also include a teacher's assistant.
How many classrooms on the campus?
As of September 2007 we will have over 100 classrooms for K-12

What are the employment requirements?
The teaching requirements for the American Bilingual School are a B.A. degree and teaching certification.
What are the school expectations?
All staff and teachers are required to undergo training on both Gradequick and Edline software which is used by ABS to manage grades, attendance, lesson planning, and parent/student communication. Ongoing training throughout the academic year may be required for some staff members.
Teachers must be committed to learning to be proficient in the the daily use of Promethean ActivBoards, and all software. We have an in-house IT tem that offers ongoing support and training to all the staff.
What are the working hours?
Kuwait weekends are on Friday / Saturday. The work week is from Sunday to Thursday, and working hours are from 7:10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday to Thrusday and 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday.
What are the school holidays?
The American Bilingual School School Calendar provides dates for all holidays. ABS does recognize most American holidays, and all Kuwaiti and Islamic holidays.
What is the local hire compensation package?
- Workmen’s compensation insurance as per Kuwaiti Labor Law
- 1 personal day annually (must be pre‐approved)
- 50% tuition discount for each dependent child (conditions apply)

I am eligible for Housing, travel and other allowances?
Housing, travel, and other allowances are not offered to local employees.
How many teaching periods will I teach per week?
There are eight 40-minute periods per day of which faculty are expected to teach six.
What is the school dress requirement?
Teachers are permitted to follow the "business casual" dress code; as long as it is modest and presentable. Jeans are permitted as long as there are no holes or excessive wear.
What's it like living in Kuwait?
Kuwait is a very modern and multi-cultural country. There is access to many western grocery stores, shopping centers, restaurants, and recreational facilities. The Kuwait expatriate community includes British, Canadian, American, Australian, New Zealand, European, and Asian nationalities. It is a very safe environment for families and/or single persons.
How much are the work visa expenses?
Approximately 280 KD in the 1st year and 74 KD every year afterwards. ABS does not pay for residency or local health insurance fees. These will be deducted against your salary during the pay period that these occur. These fees will be reimbursed after completing 1 year and 3 months of service only for employees who sign a 2 year contract; they will not be reimbursed if the employees’ service is terminated.
Can I bring a dependent with me to Kuwait, or transfer their residency onto my ABS residency?
We do not recommend bringing any dependents with you to Kuwait until after you have obtained residency. ABS is not responsible for obtaining residency for any dependent family members. We will not be held responsible for any late fees, fines, or other expenses related to delays in obtaining residency for the ABS employee. All such fees must be borne by the employee. ABS does not provide any assistance to employees in obtaining residency for dependents. We can only provide information on procedures and paperwork requirements.
How long will it take to get my residency and work permit?
- If your residency or visa expires within 4 months (120 days) of the first day of work, or less, ABS will not be held responsible for any resulting fines for overstaying the period of your residency or visa.
- The ABS HR department requires 4 months for residency transfers/new residencies. You must complete 100 days of successful employment before we begin the residency process.
- Do not plan to travel prior to receiving ABS residency. We will not be responsible for any complications, consequences, or visa problems that are encountered.
