My name is Stacy Hilgenberg, and I am the Head Library Media Specialist for the American Baccalaureate School. I have come to ABS with over twenty years of experience as an American educator teaching in New Mexico and Wisconsin, USA, the United Kingdom, and Kuwait - of which seventeen years have been as a Library Media Specialist. I am passionate about helping students understand and navigate the world of information that is available in all media today.
Formerly a school librarian for five elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools, I have a broad and deep knowledge of the different levels of library service and information needs for K12 schools. My areas of expertise include: teaching information literacy skills using the Big 6 Information Literacy model, storytimes for young children, themed learning stations, virtual field trips, readers advisory, student research projects, educational game design, student publications, collaborative teaching projects with staff, technology plan writing, book fairs, and ensuring that the overall running of the school library is efficient, useful, and enjoyable for students and staff alike.
The ABS Library is equipped with a state-of-the-art interactive board, and a relocated computer area for students and staff. The Library has been recently redesigned to open up the space to allow for more student-centered learning, and presentations. In an effort to give students a variety of formats to access books, we are acquiring new Follett eBooks and PlayAways that can be checked out in person or online from home.
My colleague Muriel Curtis is also a certified Library Media Specialist and she works with the early elementary students.
